Why is Peru’s parliament rejecting calls for early elections? | DW News

Peru’s caretaker president Dina Boluarte is refusing to step down and urging Congress to allow early elections, after lawmakers voted against the proposal. Unrest began when Pedro Castillo was arrested for trying to illegally dissolve Congress. Castillo’s supporters are calling his removal a ‘coup.’ Twenty-two people have died so far in clashes with police.
